Information on recertification and translation of authentic instruments

Please be informed that an authentic instrument issued abroad, and any private document certified by a foreign court, administrative body, notary public or any other person vested with the power to confer authenticity shall—unless an act or international agreement, or the principle of reciprocity requires otherwise—be considered to have evidentiary effect according to Hungarian law if diplomatic legalisation (hereinafter referred to as diplomatic recertification) was provided by the Hungarian foreign mission in the country where it was issued. For further information on geographical area of competence of Hungarian foreign missions, please, visit the website of Ministry of Foreign Affairsand Trade.

If the country that issued the document is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, an Apostille certificate (and QR-code) is required instead of diplomatic recertification. Apostilles are usually issued by the member state’s Ministry/Authority of Justice.

Please be informed that in case of documents where no intermediate recertification is possible (e.g., foreign bank account), the document may be attached to the application as a regular document without recertification; however, the authenticity of the document may be examined and – in case of reasonable doubt of authenticity – may be excluded from the evaluation process of the application.

Any instrument issued in a language other than Hungarian shall be accepted only with a certified Hungarian translation attached, unless otherwise provided by law. With reference to the above, please be informed that in case of third-country nationals, instruments may be accepted only with a certified Hungarian translation. Nationwide, the Hungarian Gazette Publishing and Legal Translation Centre Ltd.,MKIFK’ is authorised to issue certified Hungarian translations.

Please be informed that if the competent Hungarian foreign mission as per your citizenship or country of permanent residence, receiving the application is authorised to issue certified Hungarian translations of instruments, certified Hungarian translations issued by a consulate officer shall be accepted in the residence permit procedure as well. For further information, please contact the relevant Hungarian foreign mission.

Other documents (e.g., certificate of foreign income, foreign bank account) may be submitted in English/German, or with not certified translation. In such cases, please consult the competentclient service office as per the place of accommodation of the client in advance.
